Meet Our 2016 Volunteer of the Year: Jill Basinger

By GOTRSD on 1/17/2017

As part of our 10-year anniversary celebration, Girls on the Run San Diego introduced a new honor, the Nancy Davis Volunteer of the Year Award!

This annual honor recognizes volunteers who use their passion and skill to not only help Girls on the Run as an organization, but to elevate it for years to come. Named after a long-time volunteer, direct, or and all-around GOTR supporter, this award is given to someone who truly embodies our mission to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident. We are pleased to announce the 2016 Volunteer of the year is Jill Basinger!

Jill has been a Girls on the Run San Diego volunteer for five years. In her time with us, Jill has worked as a 5k planning volunteer, grant writer, and managed our merchandise program for the last eight 5ks.This past year, Jill dedicated a substantial amount of time to seeking, writing, and editing grant applications and reports. Jill has a true passion for health and wellness and is a true believer that every girl deserves to participate in Girls on the Run.

We recently had a chance to chat with Jill about her volunteering experience:

How did you get involved with GOTR?

I first got involved with GOTR in 2012 when I joined the 5K committee as a volunteer.

Why do you volunteer for GOTR?

I volunteer for GOTR because I love running and living an active lifestyle. I admire the mission of GOTR to empower young girls through running.

Tell us one of your favorite GOTR memories.

My favorite GOTR memory was attending my first 5k. The event was uplifting and fun and it was great seeing so many girls finish the race alongside their teammates and running buddies.

What advice would you give to new GOTR volunteers?

Regardless of how you donate your time to GOTR, try to attend an end-of-season 5K. It's a super fun day where the girls celebrate their accomplishments and complete a 5K run with their teammates.  There are plenty of smiles, lots of excitement and a great opportunity to see the impact your volunteer efforts have on all of our girls.

What are you most looking forward to in 2017?

In 2017, I look forward to serving as a member of the GOTR Board and helping to strengthen and grow GOTR in San Diego.
